Geography[edit]
It is located at 31°20'0N 73°26'0E with an altitude of 184 meters (606 feet). It is 35 km southeast from Faisalabad and 110 km from Lahore. The city serves as the headquarters of Jaranwala Tehsil, an administrative subdivision of the district.[2]
Etymology[edit]
Jaranwala originates its name from a Bohar (Oak) tree known as Jaranwala Bohar. Jaranwala is combination of two Punjabi words; Jaran and Wala, where Jaran means roots and Wala means place. Bohar tree has huge long roots spread underground and sometime over the surface. Once, this tree was positioned at the bank of a pond near Chak No. 240 GB, in the premises of Jaranwala. Later, the Chak became familiar and these days known as Jaranwala.
History[edit]
Bhagat Singh who was influential in the Indian independence movement born in Chak 105 GB now part of Jaranwala, Faisalabad. There is a beautiful 50 years old gate, named Pakistan Gate, in front of Rail Bazaar in Jaranwala which was later on rebuilt and redisgned by town municipality.
Pakistani Gate Jaranwala[edit]
Pakistani Gate is central point and historical monument of Jaranwala In January 1917 Sardar Harbeel Sing member notified area committee Jaranwala decided to construct a wooden gate to welcome Lieutenant Governor of Punjab Sir Michael Francis O'Dwyer in Jaranwala city after his visit this gate was named O'Dwyer Gate but after Jallianwala Bagh massacre peoples demanded to rename gate but that was unsuccessful and after that due to heavy wind name of O'Dwyer was vanished from gate then people called it Railway Gate then on visit of Nehru on 1st June 1936 some one wrote Nehru Gate then president of Municipal Committee Jaranawala Lala Harnam Das approved name of Nehru Gate on 30th March 1937. After independence of Pakistan first president of Municipal Committee Jaranawala Syed Altaf Hussain renamed it Pakistani Gate. it was reconstructed in 1956, 1967 and last time 2009. Demographics[edit]
According to the 2017 Census of Pakistan, the population of Jaranwala MC (Municipal Committee) is 150,380.[1]
Agriculture[edit]
Jaranwala has fertile land. It produces crops like rice, wheat, sugarcane, vegetables and fruits. Jaranwala grain market is one of the busiest markets in Punjab. It is also the biggest consumer of fertilizers by volume in Pakistan. Jaranwala has one sugar mill known as "Husein Sugar mills".[11]
